Our Story
Most agencies sell twelve months equally well. We sell one of them properly. This page explains where that specialism came from, how it turns into a cheaper and better-timed trip, and who you will actually be speaking to.
How It Started
The agency that became FlyJanuary.org opened for its first January season in[PLACEHOLDER — founding year]. It exists because one of us spent a year logging return economy fares from UK airports to six long-haul destinations, every single day, in order to settle an argument about whether Tuesday departures are genuinely cheaper. They are not, reliably. That particular myth has outlived its evidence by about a decade.
What the data did show was a cliff. Fares climb steeply from roughly 18 December, peak hard across the New Year, then fall off a ledge. By the second week of January the same seat, on the same aircraft, on the same route was routinely around a third cheaper than it had been ten days earlier — and it stayed cheap until half-term and Lunar New Year demand arrived at the end of the month. Airlines are not being generous. The aircraft are already scheduled and the crews already rostered, and an empty seat in the deadest fortnight of the travel year earns nothing at all.
The second finding was the more useful one. That same window is the most commonlymis-booked stretch in the calendar. Travellers who do find the cheap fares frequently spend them in the wrong place. A bargain flight to Goa in the second week of January is an excellent decision: dry, bright, around 32°C. The identical bargain to Bali in the identical week drops you into the middle of the wet season. Ha Long Bay is beautiful, 19°C and often grey. Cape Town is in full summer. Cairo is at its most walkable precisely because it is 20°C rather than 40°C. None of that information appears anywhere near a fare.
Then there is the paperwork, which is where January quietly punishes people. Visa centres shut over the festive period and reopen with a backlog at the exact moment January applicants need them. Passports expiring in the spring fail the six-month validity rule applied by Egypt, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. Cheap self-connected itineraries create transit obligations the traveller never knowingly agreed to, and an airline is under no duty to warn you at the gate.
So FlyJanuary.org does both halves of the job: find the fare inside the window, then make sure the trip attached to it is the right trip, on the right dates, with the right documents in your hand. The Specialism
“Specialist” is an easy word to put on a website. These are the three things behind ours, all of which you can hold us to on your own booking.
We sample published return fares on the routes we book most, daily, from mid-September through to the end of January. That record is why we can tell you in October roughly what the second week of January will cost — and why we will occasionally advise you to wait three weeks before ticketing.
January is not one climate. It is two hemispheres pulling in opposite directions: peak dry season in Krabi and peak wet season in Bali, 27°C in Cape Town and −12°C in Lapland, all in the same fortnight. We plan from monthly climate norms and a live forecast, never from a brochure photograph.
Consulates close over the festive period and reopen with a fortnight of backlog, exactly when January applicants need them. We check visa, transit, passport-validity and onward-ticket rules for every leg, and send you the result in writing before you pay a penny.
Entry rules are verified against theFCDO foreign travel advice and theIATA Travel Centre, and we re-check them in the week before departure because they change without notice.
How We Work
We are deliberately small. A January season only contains so many good departure dates, and we would rather plan eight trips carefully than forty badly.
Every figure below is drawn from our own booking records. They are the reason we can be specific about a fare window instead of merely optimistic about it.
What We Stand For
Values sections are usually decoration. These four are operational: they decide what we quote, what we decline, and when we tell a traveller to book nothing at all.
No airline, hotel group or tour operator holds a stake in this business. We agree a flat consultation fee before any work begins and credit it against your booking. If the right itinerary earns us less, that is our problem, not a reason to steer you.
Sometimes the honest answer is that your dates are the expensive part of the trip, that your chosen island is in its sixth week of rain, or that four hours to Tenerife buys more usable sunshine than eighteen hours to somewhere further away. We say it early, while changing course is still free.
A quote from us shows at least three departure dates side by side: yours, the cheapest, and the best-connected. Each one carries the fare difference, the connection quality and what it costs you in annual leave. A single number tells you nothing about whether it was a good deal.
Things go wrong at 02:00 in a transit hall, not at 15:00 on a Tuesday. Every booking carries a named consultant and a direct line for the length of the trip — not a reference number and a queue position.
